Kyiv is down to talk with Moscow, but there is one giant, territory-shaped catch

Original version ·

So, Zelenskyy dropped some behind-the-scenes drama to The Guardian. Apparently, Moscow sent a secret messenger, and Putin's inner circle is currently splitting in half.

A random businessman recently showed up in Kyiv acting as an unofficial mailbox, pitching a potential diplomatic framework. Zelenskyy told him what Ukraine has been saying since day one: we are ready to talk, but we are absolutely not giving up our land.

Meanwhile, Putin's crew is having a quiet panic attack. Half of them want to keep playing conqueror, while the other half—mostly the money guys—are looking at the Russian economy and realizing they are heading straight into a brick wall. The shadow fleet is keeping them afloat, but the ice is getting very thin.

To top it off, Zelenskyy sent a direct open letter to Putin suggesting a face-to-face meeting in a neutral country to end this. Putin mumbled something about not seeing the point, which is a weak way of saying he is too afraid to look anyone in the eye.

It turns out trying to run a global empire while the elites are sweating over their bank accounts is harder than it looks.
