Overnight, residents in occupied Kerch woke up to gunfire, heavy explosions, and the unmistakable stench of burning metal. Satellite monitoring soon confirmed two distinct fire hotspots right in the waters of the Zalyv shipyard.
This isn't just any civilian harbor. Since 2020, the Russian occupiers have been trying to construct two massive amphibious assault ships there, the Ivan Rogov and Mitrofan Moskalenko. Whether an actual warship took a direct hit or thermal sensors caught fuel docks burning, building Russian naval assets within range of Ukrainian firepower remains an extreme hazard.
Building a navy in a stolen port during an active war turns out to be an exceptionally terrible strategic decision.
