On Monday evening, Russian shelling decided to target the external high-voltage power line feeding the Zaporizhzhia NPP. The line went dead, leaving the station hanging by a thread yet again.
For those who missed the previous episodes of this endless thriller, a nuclear plant needs constant external power just to keep its cooling systems running, even when it's not actively producing electricity. When the main line goes down, the plant has to rely on backup lines or diesel generators, which is basically the nuclear equivalent of running a hospital on AA batteries.
The state grid operator Ukrenergo is already on it, trying to patch things up. It is almost impressive how one neighbor can be so consistently committed to making the entire continent nervous about radiation levels.
