Yevhenii Khmara is Ukraine's new acting Defense Minister
So, the musical chairs in our government continue, and we finally have a new candidate to run the military show. Meet the guy who used to run the elite "Alpha" special forces.
After the recent government reboot, we had a gaping hole where the Defense Minister should be. People even took to the streets to protest Mykhailo Fedorov leaving the post, but Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made his move, appointing Yevhenii Khmara as the acting boss until parliament makes it official.
This is not some civilian bureaucrat. Khmara is a hardened general-major who fought to defend Kyiv, moved to the trenches in Donetsk, and headed the legendary "Alpha" special ops unit of the SBU. He also spent the last few months as the acting chief of the entire SBU.
The president basically said: this guy knows how to plan long-range strikes that make things blow up deep inside Russia, and that's exactly what our defense needs to focus on right now.
Replacing tech-savvy ministers with special ops generals certainly signals a shift from "let's build a drone" to "let's use it to blow up a Russian oil refinery tonight."
