From Game Design to Frontlines: Remembering Volodymyr Yezhov

Original version ·

He spent his life building virtual worlds for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Cossacks, but when the real war came, he chose a very different path.

Most people know Volodymyr Yezhov because he helped bring the hauntingly beautiful, post-apocalyptic Zone to life. If you’ve ever played S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky, you’ve actually seen his face—he was the model for Loki, the leader of the Freedom faction. He wasn't just a dev; he was a guy who lived for balance, complex mechanics, and game design.

But his real life turned out to be far more intense than any game. When the full-scale invasion hit, he refused a comfortable relocation to Portugal. Instead, he joined a volunteer unit and became an expert in aerial reconnaissance. He traded a high-end keyboard for a drone controller, finding targets in the ruins of Bakhmut, a place that felt all too much like the maps he once created.

The irony is brutal: the man who taught us how to survive in the Zone couldn't survive the reality of a mine in the East. A brilliant creative mind silenced by a piece of metal, leaving behind two kids and an entire industry that owes him a massive debt.

Some legacies are coded in software, others are written in blood.
