Ukrainian Vet Oleksandr Tereshchenko Teaches Double Amputees to Cook Stew

Original version ·

A veteran who lost both arms in combat is out here hiking 280-kilometer trails and running mountain retreats where amputees learn to make pancakes and goulash completely unassisted.

Oleksandr Tereshchenko survived severe combat injuries that took both of his hands and damaged his sight, but that didn't stop him from completing the 280-kilometer Camino de Santiago solo or baking festive bread at home. Now he is taking fellow soldiers into the mountains to teach them how to conquer daily life without waiting on caretakers.

Instead of abstract motivational lectures, the retreat gets straight to the point. Veterans run through practical survival drills: taking a shower independently, handling bathroom routines, and cooking meals from scratch. The guys started with fried eggs and pancakes and wrapped up the week by simmering a massive pot of traditional bograch stew over the fire.

Hundreds of soldiers across Ukraine are now facing life with double arm amputations. Rather than waiting for complex bureaucratic programs to materialize, veterans are stepping up to build their own informal academy of stubborn self-reliance.

Simmering a complex traditional stew over a fire with no hands permanently ruins every excuse ever made about being too tired to cook dinner.

No hands and still making bograch over an open fire. Unstoppable.
