Venezuela Earthquake Toll Hits 4,300 as Leaders Hunt for Gold

Original version ·

A massive double tremor has leveled La Guaira, and the government is already busy asking for favors.

When the ground shakes with a magnitude of 7.5, it usually spells disaster. Venezuela just got hit by two of them back-to-back, and the numbers are grim. Whole districts are gone, and while the official search for survivors has been called off, families are still digging through the rubble on their own.

The recovery bill is sitting at a cool 37 billion dollars. Instead of just looking for aid, the interim president Delcy Rodríguez decided to get creative. She has officially asked King Charles III to kindly hand over 30 tons of gold that has been sitting in United Kingdom vaults under sanctions.

The government is essentially trying to trade a humanitarian catastrophe for a massive payday.

It is bold to ask for the family jewels while everyone is busy pointing fingers at how slow the response was in the first place.
