US slaps 50% tariffs on Canada, and yes, hockey sticks are included

Original version ·

Just when you thought trade wars were a thing of the past, Trump decided to tax almost everything coming from Canada. Even the stuff they use to play their national sport.

The Trump administration just decided that friendly neighbors are cool, but business is business. Three new executive orders have been signed, and they are about to make life in Canada a whole lot more complicated.

US is slapping 50% tariffs on almost all Canadian imports, ignoring free trade agreements, to level the playing field. The targets? Everything from machinery and wine to... cement and actual hockey sticks. Yes, they are literally taxing hockey.

The White House claims this is a retaliation for Canada discriminating against American dairy, alcohol, and machinery. They didn't even bother with the US-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement. The only things that escaped this tax hammer are energy, potash, seafood, and critical minerals. Everything else gets a massive price hike in 30 days.

Remember when the US president threatened Canada with financial pain over their forest fires? Well, he finally found a way to collect.

It takes a special kind of talent to start a trade war over maple syrup and hockey.

Wait, they exempted energy and critical minerals. So the actual important stuff is fine, this is just a giant PR stunt to squeeze them on dairy.
