UN confirms May was the deadliest month in Ukraine since 2022

While diplomats express their usual deep concern, escalation on the ground has quietly set a grim new record.

The UN Security Council held another emergency session after a massive wave of Russian strikes. Mohamed Khaled Khiari reported that May saw at least 274 civilians killed and nearly 1,800 wounded across Ukraine. On top of that, strikes hit the historic Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and art museums, pushing the tally of damaged cultural sites past 530 according to UNESCO.

May officially became the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since April 2022. The total confirmed death toll has crossed 16,000, though everyone in the room knows the real figures are far higher.

Deep concern and calls for de-escalation remain remarkably ineffective against incoming cruise missiles.
