UN confirms over 95% of Ukrainian POWs faced torture in Russia
The UN human rights office finally put numbers on what everyone already knew, documenting brutal, systemic abuse of prisoners.
Human rights officials at the UN conducted over two thousand confidential interviews with released soldiers and civilians. Their headline finding surprised absolutely no one living in Ukraine: over 95% of Ukrainian prisoners of war suffered routine, systematic torture in Russian captivity.
The details read like a medieval horror manual: electric shocks, severe beatings with wooden clubs and heavy belts, dog attacks, and mock executions. More than half of the interviewed soldiers reported sexual violence, while at least 177 POWs either died directly from torture and denied medical care or were executed outright early in their captivity.
It is just as grim for non-combatants. Around 16,000 Ukrainian civilians remain unlawfully detained in Russian custody, with 85% reporting the exact same horrific treatment.
Deep concern and official reports remain the international community's primary instruments for documenting systemic war crimes.
