Why the West wants Ukrainians as victims, not heroes
Director Marysia Nikitiuk points out a weird trend: Europe likes us better when we're crying, not winning.
According to director Marysia Nikitiuk, there is a massive wall in the cultural West when it comes to our war. People want to look away from the ugly reality of frontline combat. They prefer a sanitized version of the conflict where Ukrainians are just helpless victims in need of pity, rather than capable people actively kicking ass.
The irony is that Nikitiuk is now working on a film called Noi, which highlights that most of our soldiers were once ordinary civilians. The project is already getting attention at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. It aims to smash the trope that war is just for career military folks and show the world that this is a grassroots, nationwide struggle for survival.
It is apparently easier to donate to a tragedy than to respect a partner who refuses to go down without a fight.
