Only a third of Ukrainians abroad plan to return, says Ella Libanova

Original version ·

The math on our post-war population is getting grim, and Ella Libanova just dropped some hard truths about why everyone is staying put.

Right now, about 5 million of us are living abroad, and Ella Libanova from the Institute for Demography and Quality of Life says the numbers are sobering. While we were hoping for a massive homecoming once the dust settles, the reality is that only about a third of those who left are likely to return.

The longer this drags on, the more people just… settle. Kids are in local schools, parents have jobs, and they are learning the language. It’s not just a temporary stay anymore; it’s a life. When you combine that with the fact that 70% of women aged 20-64 are already working abroad, the incentive to pack up and start from scratch is evaporating fast.

Even worse, there’s a fear of a second wave of emigration once men are allowed to leave the country. If a guy comes home from the front and sees no stable work here, while his wife and kids are already established in, say, Germany or Poland, he’s probably getting a one-way ticket to join them.

The demographic math doesn't lie, and it’s going to be a tough conversation for the future.
