Ukraine to Allies: We Need a Winter Air Defense Package, Heavy on Patriot

Original version ·

Winter is coming, and Russia’s favorite seasonal hobby of trying to freeze towns is returning right on schedule.

At the OSCE meeting in Vienna, Ukrainian diplomat Rostyslav Palagusynets laid it out straight: Ukraine needs a dedicated winter air defense package right now. Not warm words, but actual interceptor missiles for Patriot systems.

The reasoning is simple. Ballistic missiles do not stop for bad weather, and Patriot remains the main shield capable of knocking them down before they hit power grids and apartment blocks. While systems like IRIS-T and NASAMS handle cruise missiles and drones, stopping heavy ballistics requires constant restocks of high-end interceptors.

Ukraine and Germany are already co-developing a new anti-ballistic shield named FREYJA. That is great for long-term security, but winter arrives long before new factories finish production lines.

Air defense stockpiles before freezing temperatures aren't political bargaining chips — they are the direct line between functioning power lines and cold darkness.
