Russian ships fled to Novorossiysk to hide, but the harbor caught fire anyway

Original version ·

Remember how the Black Sea Fleet fled Crimea thinking mainland Russia was a safe haven? Yeah, about that.

The Ukrainian military decided to check up on the Russian fleet in Novorossiysk, launching a massive salvo of drones, Palyanytsia rocket-drones, and Neptune missiles across the sea. Four warships took damage at once, including the frigates Admiral Makarov and Admiral Essen.

It didn't stop with the fleet either. A radar for the S-300 air defense system took a direct hit on the pier, alongside local oil terminal infrastructure and berths.

Relocating an entire naval base across the sea just to change the coordinates where ships get wrecked is certainly a strategy.
