Ukraine to pay €3,000 in urgent reparations to conflict sexual violence survivors

Original version ·

The government finally approved a payout mechanism for those who survived the worst kind of Russian atrocities, and international donors are footing the bill.

It took over two years, but the Cabinet of Ministers finally greenlit a mechanism for urgent reparations. Survivors of conflict-related sexual violence by Russian troops will receive a one-off payment of €3,000. Even children born as a result of these horrific crimes are eligible.

The money isn't coming from our struggling state budget, but from international donors and partners, meaning it won't cut into our domestic funds. Best of all, getting this money won't affect anyone's eligibility for regular state subsidies or aid.

The official stats are grim: 398 registered cases since the full-scale invasion began, including 248 women and 150 men. But everyone knows the real number is much higher because of the massive social stigma and trauma. Yulia Svyrydenko noted that many survivors simply choose to keep silent.

Forcing the actual perpetrators to pay for this would be the ultimate justice, but for now, international donors stepping in to help survivors rebuild their lives is a start.

good that donors are paying for this, but €3000 is still nothing for the psychological trauma they have to live with. hope the application process is actually private.
