Government promises actual service terms and bigger paychecks for the military soon
The Ministry of Defence is apparently cooking up a reform that addresses the two biggest questions every soldier has: "when do I get paid more?" and "when do I get to go home?"
It feels like everyone has been talking about demobilization terms since the beginning of time, but now the authorities say they are finally wrapping up a draft. Yulia Svyrydenko announced that in just a few weeks, we will see a plan that sets clear timeframes for military service and bumps up the pay.
Of course, there is a classic catch. Raising salaries for hundreds of thousands of active troops requires what officials call "balancing the budget," which is polite political speak for "where on earth do we find billions of hryvnias." The latest budget changes already squeezed out every drop for defense, but apparently, they did not include this massive pay raise.
So now the financial wizards are trying to make the math work so the payments do not suddenly freeze mid-year.
Watching the government try to balance a wartime budget is like watching someone play Tetris where the blocks fall at light speed and the game console is already on fire.
