Ukrainian forces hit a Russian MiG-29 and the Pantsir meant to guard it

Original version ·

A Russian airbase in Kursk just learned that parking an expensive jet right next to an air defense system doesn't help if both get struck anyway.

The Ukrainian 15th Artillery Reconnaissance Brigade Black Forest paid an uninvited visit to the Khalino airfield in Kursk, and the scorecard looks pretty grim for the hosts.

Ukrainian strikes managed to hit a MiG-29 fighter jet alongside a Pantsir-S1 surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft artillery system on the tarmac.

The entire operational purpose of a Pantsir is to protect high-value targets like airbases and expensive jets from incoming fire. Watching it take a hit right next to the exact plane it was deployed to guard is a whole new level of air defense irony.

Buying an anti-air shield that detonates together with the jet it was supposed to shield feels like a tough sell for future export deals.
