HUR Hacked Russia's Polyus Laser Institute to Reveal Its Chinese Heart
Ukrainian intelligence just walked away with tens of gigabytes of secret data from Russia's key military tech hub, and turns out their "domestic" high-tech weapons are basically assembled from AliExpress.
The target was the Polyus Research Institute, a key research facility operating under the state-owned defense giant Rostec. They specialize in quantum electronics, high-tech lasers, and navigation systems for Russia's precision weaponry. Or at least, they pretend to.
Ukrainian cyber specialists managed to extract tens of gigabytes of internal documents. We are talking about complete schematics, testing data, and the personal details of every engineer and designer involved. But the real gold is in the supply chains.
As it turns out, Russian independent military industry is completely dependent on Chinese components.
For example, the guidance systems of the much-hyped Iskander ballistic missiles rely entirely on Chinese-made optics. On top of that, Russian drones and missiles navigate using laser gyroscopes imported directly from the Tianjin Navigation Institute in China.
The documents also reveal that Russia is currently testing an experimental laser anti-drone system in the Bryansk region. The project was meant to be a massive state secret, but now Kyiv has the complete blueprints and the home addresses of everyone building it.
Importing cheap tech from China to build "analog-free" superweapons only to have the entire blueprint stolen by Ukrainian hackers is peak Russian military planning.
