Ukraine's drones just hit nine Russian shadow fleet tankers at once

Original version ·

Think of the ultimate party crasher. Russia thought its sketchy "shadow fleet" of uninsured, rusty tankers was safely hiding in the Sea of Azov. Ukraine's drone operators had other plans.

Russia's shadow fleet is basically a collection of maritime ghosts—old, rusty tankers sailing under random flags to smuggle oil and bypass Western sanctions. They usually operate in the shadows, hoping nobody notices. Well, someone noticed.

Our Unmanned Systems Forces decided to throw a massive pool party in the Sea of Azov. Instead of targeting just one or two ships, they went for a full sweep and struck nine Russian oil tankers in a single night.

The Sea of Azov is practically a closed Russian lake at this point, surrounded by occupied territory. Parking your precious, sanction-busting oil fleet there was supposed to be the "safe" option. Turns out, there are no safe zones left when naval drones are on the hunt.

Smuggling oil in rusty buckets gets a lot harder when those buckets start catching fire all at once.
