Ukraine calls emergency UN talks over ship attacks

Original version ·

Another day, another pirate movie in the Black Sea because someone decided blowing up grain freighters is a geopolitical move.

Russia hit at least three civilian cargo ships over just a few days, leaving sailors dead or injured. The timing couldn't be worse: right in the middle of harvest season, not a single vessel dared to sail through the corridor today.

Shipping giant Maersk hit the emergency brakes immediately, freezing port operations near Odesa and rerouting its fleet to Romania. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called it out for what it is: holding global breadbaskets hostage, straight out of the Strait of Hormuz terror playbook.

Now Ukraine is dragging the entire UN Security Council into an emergency session to ask the room what the plan is when commercial bulk carriers become target practice.

Watching the world's most veto-paralyzed diplomatic chamber draft a sternly worded statement will surely fix maritime insurance rates by morning.
