Ukraine Swaps Top Generals: Legendary BMP-Jumper Takes Command
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy officially signed off on a massive shakeup at the top of Ukraine's military, replacing commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi.
The official decrees are out: Mykhailo Drapatyi is now the top commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, with airborne veteran Ihor Skybiuk stepping in to head the General Staff.
If the name Drapatyi rings a bell, it is probably because of that famous 2014 viral clip where an infantry fighting vehicle literally flew over a pro-Russian barricade during the battle for Mariupol. That was his armored vehicle leading the charge. Later that year, he led hundreds of trapped soldiers out of a deadly border encirclement with minimal casualties.
He replaces Oleksandr Syrskyi and Andriy Hnatov as part of a broader reset of top-level command structures.
When the nation's highest military post goes to a combat commander whose defining career moment is sending a 13-ton armored vehicle airborne over enemy obstacles, expectations for hesitation are pretty low.
