Trump Wanted Ukraine to Stop Bombing Russian Refineries. Alone.

Original version ·

Because nothing says balanced diplomacy quite like asking one side to stop hitting back while the other continues turning their power grid to ash.

So here is the latest diplomatic masterpiece: Trump and his emissaries, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, reportedly spent eight hours in Florida leaning on Ukrainian negotiators. The pitch was simple: stop sending drones into Russian oil refineries.

Zelensky offered a painfully logical counter-proposal: sure, we will stop hitting your refineries if Putin stops missile-striking our power stations. A mutual energy ceasefire. Fair trade, right?

Apparently not. Trump insisted on a unilateral halt only from Kyiv, arguing that Russian oil problems drive up American gas prices, while Russian strikes on Ukrainian civilian heating simply do not count as equivalent. When Kyiv refused to take the deal, team Trump went ahead and cut a diesel deal directly with Moscow anyway, threatening to pull intelligence sharing if Ukraine keeps blowing up Russian fuel depots.

Cheap diesel at American pumps is clearly worth freezing an entire ally in the dark.
