Tokayev asked Putin to freeze the war in Ukraine
The President of Kazakhstan decided to play courier for Western signals and asked Putin to freeze the war.
During a meeting in Omsk, Tokayev suddenly announced that he had been asked by unnamed contacts in Europe and the US to pass along a proposal. His idea was simple: freeze the war in Ukraine and return to an "Istanbul formula 2.0" under guarantees from major powers.
He added that the nature of this war is unclear to many and that the situation only benefits the enemies of both sides. Putin calmly listened and promised to keep him updated on how things are going on the Ukrainian front.
It turns out Kazakhstan is now acting as an unofficial messenger between the West and the Kremlin.
