Up to 16,000 Ukrainian civilians might be held captive by Russia

Original version ·

While official numbers are in the hundreds, the true scale of the crisis in Russia is likely much darker.

Dmytro Lubinets, the human rights ombudsman, just dropped a reality check that is hard to digest. While we officially have about 2,000 verified cases of civilian hostages, the real number is estimated to be closer to 16,000.

The issue is that Russia doesn't even bother with paperwork. People are sitting in prisons for years without charges, trials, or any legal status at all. It is not just a kidnapping; it is a complete void where human lives just vanish into the system, and the International Committee of the Red Cross can barely scratch the surface of these numbers.

It is absurd that a state can just erase thousands of people and act like it is a standard administrative process.

Wait, 16 thousand? This is absolutely insane. How is the world not talking about this every single day?
