Sweden is sending Gripen jets, but there is a slight waiting list
Sweden and Ukraine just locked in a deal for 32 Gripen fighter jets, split between freebies and a shopping spree. But as with any good Scandinavian furniture, assembly and delivery will take some time.
First, the good news: Sweden is giving Ukraine 16 Gripen C/D jets as straight-up military aid. The catch? They won't land in Ukrainian skies until early 2027.
But wait, there's more. Ukraine is also buying 16 of the ultra-modern, shiny new Gripen E models. These ones are financed by an EU loan with a little help from the UK. The delivery date on those? Early 2029.
Ukrainian pilots and technicians are already in Sweden, probably learning how to read the Swedish IKEA-style manuals for supersonic jets.
It is a fantastic upgrade, provided the war plans accommodate a five-year shipping delay on the premium package.
