When SBU meets GUR: The Kyiv shootout that wasn't on the bingo card

Original version ·

It turns out the most dangerous thing in Kyiv this week wasn't a drone, but a good old-fashioned friendly-fire standoff between our own agencies.

So, we have a situation where the guys from the SBU and the folks from the GUR decided to settle their professional differences with live ammunition in a residential neighborhood. Because obviously, that’s exactly how inter-agency cooperation should look in the middle of a war.

The State Bureau of Investigation is now acting as the referee, handing out official suspicions to both sides like they’re party favors. One guy is looking at charges for exceeding his authority, and the other for attempted violence against a law enforcement officer. It’s a bizarre mix of bureaucratic paperwork and actual gunfire.

We are still waiting to see how they explain why they were pointing barrels at each other instead of the actual enemy. While the General Prosecutor’s Office tries to figure out who shot first, the rest of the city is left wondering if we need a map just to avoid getting caught in a crossfire between our own protectors.

It’s nice to know the only thing standing between the country and chaos is a bunch of people who can't even agree on who’s on whose team.
