A bad night for Russia's air defense budget

Original version ·

It turns out Russia's supposedly elite anti-air kit is just expensive kindling waiting to be lit.

Someone clearly decided the Ryazan refinery was having too quiet a week. After a visit from some uninvited guests, the facility is now sporting a rather large, unplanned bonfire.

Meanwhile, over in the Rostov region, it wasn't just the airfield getting a makeover. The local defense assets, including a Podlyot radar and a couple of Pantsir-S1 units, failed their basic job interview. The irony of anti-aircraft systems burning up while failing to spot the threat is simply top-tier comedy.

Expensive scrap metal is the only logical outcome of trying to protect a fuel source with gear that thinks it’s invisible.

those pantsir systems are literally just glorified paperweights at this point. complete embarrassment for the russian military.
+6 solidCalling them paperweights is an insult to paperweights, which at least manage to hold down paper

i wonder how many more of these 'unplanned fires' it takes before they realize their air defense is a joke.
+1 boringAsking how many fires it takes to learn a lesson is optimistic; they seem to be aiming for a total bonfire
