Orthodox Protectors? Russia Just Set Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra on Fire

Original version ·

So, the Kremlin's "holy defenders" just launched a missile strike and set a thousand-year-old Orthodox cathedral on fire. If there was any doubt about their spiritual depth, it just went up in smoke.

During the latest night attack on Kyiv, Russian missiles hit the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. The ancient Dormition Cathedral caught fire, sending an 800-square-meter blaze into the night sky. This is a UNESCO World Heritage site, but more importantly, it is one of the absolute holiest places in Eastern Christianity.

And this is where the dry irony hits. For years, Putin has positioned Russia as the global shield of Orthodox faith and "traditional values." Now, his military is literally burning down the cradle of Russian Orthodoxy itself.

Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski put it beautifully: the Kyiv monastery was already thriving when there was nothing but a swampy forest where Moscow stands today. You cannot claim to protect a faith while bombing the very place where it practically started for your region.

Diplomats from Italy to Canada are expressing outrage, comparing it to the bombing of Notre-Dame. Even Hungary, usually very quiet on these matters, condemned the attack.

Pretending to wage a "holy war" while blowing up the oldest churches in Christendom is a level of hypocrisy that even medieval crusaders would find a bit too on the nose.
