Poland's President wants to strip Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle

Original version ·

History is a tricky thing, especially when we start looking at the fine print of bilateral friendship awards.

Polish President Karol Nawrocki has decided to take back Poland's highest honor, the Order of the White Eagle, which was awarded to Volodymyr Zelenskyy back in 2023.

The reason? Zelenskyy recently named a Ukrainian special forces unit after "Heroes of the UPA." In Warsaw, that name is a massive red flag. Nawrocki called the move an outrage and a blow to the reconciliation both nations have been building.

To make this official, Poland's Prime Minister still needs to sign off on the decision, so it's not a done deal yet. Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs tried to smooth things over, explaining that honoring the UPA was never meant as an anti-Polish dig. But when historical trauma enters the room, logic usually takes the back seat.

It turns out geopolitical brotherhood only goes as far as the history textbooks allow.
