Why closing the Jasionka hub is a total fantasy

Original version ·

Polish politicians are furious over Ukrainian historical naming choices, but threatening to close the main military transit hub is where reality hits them hard.

It has been a remarkably petty couple of weeks in Ukrainian-Polish relations. First, Ukraine named a special forces unit after UPA heroes. Then, Polish politicians got so furious that some even suggested stripping Zelenskyy of Poland's highest state honor. Prime Minister Donald Tusk publicly demanded that Kyiv take full responsibility for the diplomatic crisis.

But then, some hotheads in Warsaw started hinting at the ultimate nuclear option: shutting down the Jasionka airport hub near Rzeszów, through which almost all Western military aid flows into Ukraine.

That is when former Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz stepped in to bring everyone back to earth. He pointed out the obvious: closing the hub would instantly turn Poland into an international pariah. The Americans and Europeans would simply not allow it, and Warsaw would be forced to backtrack immediately while looking incredibly foolish on the global stage.

Threatening to block crucial military aid over decades-old historical grievances is a bold strategy, right up until Washington makes a single phone call.
