Pochaiv Lavra gets a 30-day ultimatum to cut ties with the Moscow Patriarchate

Original version ·

Looks like the clock is ticking for one of the most famous religious spots in the country.

The State Service of Ukraine for Ethnopolitics finally had enough. They conducted a deep dive and officially confirmed what everyone basically knew: the Pochaiv Lavra is tethered to the Russian Orthodox Church. Since that organization is banned in Ukraine, the government just handed them a 30-day notice to fix their compliance issues.

It is wild that it took this long to formalize the paperwork, but here we are. The clock starts now for the folks in charge to figure out how to untangle a relationship that was supposed to be history years ago. Either they comply, or they deal with the legal fallout of sticking to their old habits.

Ignoring a government order while sitting on one of the most significant sites in the country is certainly a bold life choice.
