Viktor Orbán Lost the Country but Kept His Party Job
When you get absolutely demolished in a national election and lose power after 16 years, the logical next step is... getting re-elected as party boss with 99% of the votes. Absolute classic.
After a historic beating at the polls, Viktor Orbán has officially transitioned into his new era: being the undisputed king of the opposition. At the latest party congress, Orbán was the only candidate on the ballot. Naturally, he secured 729 out of 737 votes. Zero votes against, and eight brave souls abstained—probably people who accidentally sneezed while raising their hands.
Meanwhile, the political reality outside their cozy party hall is brutal. His arch-rival, Péter Magyar, and his Tisza party currently have about three times more support than Fidesz. Orbán, of course, spent his speech calling Magyar a 'viceroy' of the West and admitting some 'strategic mistakes.' But hey, he still insists he is the only savior who can lead them back to glory.
To make things even funnier, Hungary's anti-corruption chief recently estimated that corruption during Orbán’s 16-year rule cost the country roughly $194 billion. That is quite a parting gift.
It turns out that losing the entire country is just a minor detail when your own party is basically a fan club.
