Russia's biggest refinery hits the pause button after a long-distance drone visitor
It turns out 2,500 kilometers isn't quite as safe as Moscow thought for their oil industry.
The Omsk oil refinery—the crown jewel of Russia's refining capacity—has essentially gone on an indefinite coffee break. A couple of Fire Point drones managed to travel nearly 2,500 kilometers just to say hello to the facility's main distillation unit.
The damage was significant enough to halt operations and stop all fuel sales on the local exchange. While the Russians have a couple of dusty old backup units they could try to fire up, the main production line is currently toast. It is quite a commute for a drone, but evidently, the equipment was feeling generous.
Geography no longer acts as a shield when the hardware is this persistent.
