Kyiv to mark Olenivka POW massacre as UN findings confirm Russian blame

Original version ·

Four years after Russia blew up unarmed Ukrainian prisoners in Olenivka, Kyiv is holding a memorial gathering on Maidan.

In July 2022, Russian forces blew up a prison barracks in Olenivka containing unarmed Ukrainian POWs from Azov, killing 49 soldiers and injuring over 130. Right after the blast, Moscow immediately claimed Ukraine shelled its own troops with a HIMARS strike.

Even an internal analysis by the UN later confirmed what was obvious from day one: Russia planned and executed the explosion from inside the prison facility.

To honor the murdered defenders, the Association of Families of Azovstal Defenders is hosting a public gathering at Maidan Nezalezhnosti, alongside an outdoor exhibition titled "Olenivka: Quintessence of Cruelty".

Executing sleeping prisoners and lying about the evidence remains the classic signature of Russian warfare.
