Ukraine just put its own Obria satellite into orbit

Original version ·

While everyone was distracted by the usual chaos, Ukraine quietly launched the first piece of its own sovereign space network.

Himera and the Danish crew at GomSpace finally pulled it off. They launched Obria Nano, a test satellite that's already up there chirping away. It hitched a ride on a SpaceX mission, and now the team is running tests to see if this tech actually holds up in the vacuum of space.

This is the first brick in building a truly independent satellite network for the country. The goal isn't just to play with space gadgets; it's about eventually cutting the cord on relying entirely on foreign providers for critical comms. The plan is to get this whole constellation working, and eventually, build the gear right here at home.

Seems like the days of just buying off-the-shelf coverage might finally be evolving into building the backbone itself. Let that sink in.

About time we stopped relying on everyone else's goodwill for our signal. Hope the hardware is as good as the ambition.

Cool story but how many years until this is actually useful for the guys on the front? Hardware takes forever.
