NATO and Ramstein Meet in Brussels to Talk Air Defense and Big Bombs

Original version ·

Just when everyone is waiting for summer vacation, defense ministers are packing their bags for Brussels to figure out how to keep Ukraine’s skies clear and what to do with NATO's nuclear button.

Brussels is hosting a double feature on Thursday: a massive meeting of NATO defense ministers and another round of the Ramstein format. It’s the final warm-up before the big summer summit in Ankara, and the agenda is basically everything, everywhere, all at once.

First, they are diving into the nuclear planning group. Because nothing says a peaceful summer like discussing nuclear deterrence under the guidance of the new boss, Mark Rutte. After that, they’ll transition straight into the Ramstein meeting to discuss Ukraine.

The main focus is turning recent G7 promises of extra air defense systems into actual, physical metal on Ukrainian soil. It turns out political promises don't shoot down missiles by themselves, so now the military folks have to figure out who actually has the spare launchers to ship.

Watching bureaucrats try to synchronize their watches with the speed of incoming missiles is always an exercise in patience.
