A draft office erased 1,500 men and burned the files. Digital backup ruined everything
Transcarpathian military recruiters thought they ran a foolproof magic trick, until cloud backups ruined their cozy retirement plan.
Between 2022 and 2024, officials at the Mukachevo draft office turned evasion into a high-margin enterprise. For $5,000 to $10,000 a pop, over 1,500 men were quietly wiped from military records, mostly under the guise of bad health.
When investigators finally caught on, the head of the center panicked and staged a paper purge, burning medical records that were legally required to be archived for 75 years. But the scheme belonged to the 1990s — investigators simply pulled every single medical file right back out of the digital database of NHSU.
Over a hundred of those erased citizens have already been restored to the draft registry, while the former draft bosses are heading to court.
Analog corruption in a digital country is a tough business model.
