Moscow claims 1,600 drones attacked—and the local refinery is feeling the heat

Original version ·

The skies over the Russian capital apparently turned into an absolute swarm this weekend, and it seems the city’s oil infrastructure couldn't quite dodge the chaos.

According to Sergey Sobyanin, the sheer scale of the drone raid was record-breaking. We are talking about 1,600 units allegedly heading toward the city, which is quite the logistical headache for any defense system. While official accounts love to focus on how many were intercepted, the Moscow Oil Refinery ended up catching fire, which is a bit of a problem considering it handles a massive chunk of the region's fuel.

It wasn't just the refinery getting all the attention; a massive logistics complex in the region also took a hit. To make things even more awkward, there was a Pantsir air defense system parked just 500 meters away from the storage site. Andrey Vorobyov confirmed the damage, and the local aviation scene is a total mess. Aeroflot had to scrap or divert over 150 flights as the skies became too complicated for business as usual.

Apparently, air defense is great at intercepting headlines, but not so good at intercepting actual drones.

1,600 drones? Are they making these things out of paper airplanes now? The math doesn't even make sense.
