US Missiles Are Out of Stock: Why Your New Tomahawks Will Take 5 Years

Original version ·

The Pentagon just told allies that those fancy Patriot and Tomahawk missiles are currently on an indefinite backorder.

Turns out, the world's biggest military superpower is basically running on empty. After getting involved in the conflict with Iran, Washington burned through half of its Patriot and THAAD interceptors, plus a massive chunk of its Tomahawk stash.

The result? A five-year waiting list for anyone hoping to get their hands on new gear. Even Germany is getting the cold shoulder, and Ukraine is left sweating it out before winter. Donald Trump is floating the idea of letting allies build their own, but until then, everyone is essentially in line at the world's slowest drive-thru.

It is almost as if treating a multi-decade defense manufacturing base like a just-in-time delivery service was not a great idea for the long run.
