The story of combat medic Olena Kovtunenko
Some people are built entirely of resilience. Olena Kovtunenko raised three sons, worked as a nurse, did plastering side gigs, and went to the frontlines to pull wounded soldiers out of fire.
Before the full-scale invasion, Olena was already doing the work of three people in her hometown of Novoaidar. She worked full shifts as a hospital nurse, took on construction side jobs to support her three sons, baked pies for her colleagues, and mastered wall plastering on the side.
In 2019, she took that work ethic to the military, joining the medical company of the 53rd Mechanized Brigade in Volnovakha. She pulled soldiers out of artillery fire in stabilization centers. When her contract ended in 2022, she simply refused to step back and kept serving in Selydove.
On November 20, 2023, she was killed under enemy fire while doing what she had done her entire life — saving others.
Quiet heroes like her are the exact reason this country still stands.
