Maduro’s New York trial is set for 2027

Original version ·

Captured Venezuelan strongman Nicolás Maduro finally got his court date in New York, and the wheels of justice are spinning with zero rush.

After being plucked straight out of Caracas by US forces and flown to a federal lockup in Brooklyn, Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores finally stood before a judge. Facing charges of turning an entire state into a cocaine pipeline, the former president insists he is actually a kidnapped prisoner of war.

Neither asked for bail, which is convenient, because judge Alvin Hellerstein decided that the actual criminal trial will only kick off on June 1, 2027. That is over three years behind bars before twelve jurors even hear opening remarks.

The wild part is how the legal defense is being funded. Washington lifted sanctions just enough to allow Maduro to tap frozen Venezuelan state funds to pay top-dollar American lawyers.

Spending years in a federal detention center while your bankrupt home country covers the legal tab is quite the retirement plan.
