A Diplomatic Traffic Jam in Kyiv: Who Dropped By for Statehood Day?

Original version ·

It looks like half of Europe decided to swing by Kyiv today for a party.

Kyiv has suddenly become the most popular place to be, as a bunch of leaders from Southeastern Europe and the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, rolled into town. It is Ukraine’s Statehood Day, and apparently, the best way to celebrate is by holding the fifth Ukraine–Southeast Europe Summit.

The guest list is basically a who’s who of regional heavyweights. They are here to talk about European security and defense, which is code for figuring out how to keep the continent from falling apart. It’s funny how these summits move around like a traveling circus, having already hit up spots like Athens, Tirana, and Dubrovnik before finally landing in the capital.

Diplomacy is officially back in fashion, and apparently, the invitation list is getting harder to manage by the day.
