Historic Lavra and Arsenal on fire in Kyiv after Russian attack

Original version ·

Just when you think the neighbors can’t get any more "spiritual," they go ahead and target a thousand-year-old monastery and a massive art museum in the middle of the night.

The overnight strike on Kyiv was brutal, leaving several dead and dozens injured. But the sheer symbolic absurdity of the targets is what really stands out.

The roof of the famous Assumption Cathedral inside the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra caught fire, covering about 800 square meters. Right across the street, the massive Mystetskyi Arsenal—a historic fortress turned cultural hub—was also burning, with a fire spreading over 1,000 square meters.

Firefighters had to scramble to save both ancient religious heritage and contemporary art at the exact same time. It takes a special kind of "demilitarization" strategy to decide that monks and museum curators are the ultimate threat to national security.

Defending traditional values by burning down one of the oldest Orthodox shrines in Eastern Europe is certainly a bold theological strategy.
