Kyiv Color-Codes Air Raids: Drones Are Yellow, Missiles Are Red

Original version ·

Instead of sending everyone straight into panic mode over a lone drone, Kyiv decided alerts need some nuance.

The capital rolled out a tiered air raid warning system. Yellow is for a drone somewhere in the airspace. Red means incoming missiles or heavy drone swarms. Green is all clear. If a loitering drone suddenly turns into an incoming ballistic missile, the system quietly swaps badges without an intermediate all-clear pause.

The catch is that this high-tech threat differentiation works everywhere except the elite Pechersk district, while Holosiiv and Sviatoshyn are only halfway there. The local siren hardware in those pockets literally cannot differentiate between incoming threats, meaning residents there will keep getting blasted by the classic, undifferentiated sirens regardless of what is flying overhead.

Living in the government quarter turned out to be the least technologically adaptable way to survive an air raid.
