Yevhen Konovalets is back home after nearly 90 years in Rotterdam

Original version ·

The remains of the legendary Ukrainian military commander and nationalist founder have arrived in Ukraine for a full state reburial.

One of the most defining figures of 20th-century Ukrainian resistance has finally returned to native soil. Yevhen Konovalets, a colonel of the UNR Army and the founder of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, spent nearly nine decades buried in a cemetery in Rotterdam.

Following an official exhumation in the Netherlands, his remains were transported to Kyiv with full state and military honors. Ukraine has finally started bringing its historical pantheon home instead of leaving national figures scattered across foreign graveyards. After a farewell service at the cathedral in Kyiv, he will be laid to rest at the National Military Memorial Cemetery.

Moscow spent decades sending assassins across Europe to wipe out Ukrainian leaders, only to watch them return home as state heroes while the Soviet empire ended up in the dustbin of history.
