India summons Russia after missile strike kills four Indian sailors

Original version ·

It turns out cheap oil gets slightly awkward when your strategic partner starts blowing up your civilian sailors in the Black Sea.

Russian forces lobbed a missile at a commercial cargo ship called MV Golden Leo near the coast of Ukraine. The ship flew the flag of Guinea-Bissau, but the crew was international, and four citizens of India were killed on the spot, with another left in critical condition.

So New Delhi called in Russia's chargé d'affaires, Vladimir Ladanov, for an uncomfortable chat. India officially condemned the strike and stated that attacking commercial shipping and killing civilians is completely unacceptable.

Deep discounts on crude oil can buy plenty of geopolitical patience, but neutrality starts looking messy when the invoice arrives in body bags.

This is what happens when a government pretends international law is just an optional suggestion.
