Ihor Skybiuk takes over Ukraine’s General Staff in massive reboot
Just as everyone was processing the news about the new commander-in-chief, Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the next high-level military shakeup.
The top brass reset is moving fast. Major General Ihor Skybiuk, a seasoned paratrooper who previously commanded the 80th Air Assault Brigade and the entire Air Assault Forces, is stepping in as the new Chief of the General Staff. He will work alongside the newly appointed Commander-in-Chief Mykhailo Drapatyi to reshape everything from corps structure to practical mobilization.
While former chief Oleksandr Syrskyi transitions to a new role within the defense system, the upgraded leadership is already locking in priorities — including an anti-ballistic program called "Freya", localized missile production licensing, and long-range strike logistics. Putting front-line airborne commanders in charge of top strategic posts seems to be the explicit theme of this shakeup.
Putting battle-tested paratroopers in charge of military bureaucracy is certainly one way to speed up decision-making.
