IAEA negotiates an eighth truce just to patch up power lines around ZNPP

Original version ·

Nothing captures nuclear safety quite like having to schedule an eighth temporary ceasefire just so technicians can glue power lines back onto Europe's biggest nuclear plant.

Drones have spent the past couple of weeks battering the thermal plant near ZNPP, wrecking the critical transformers that keep the reactors' cooling systems on life support. To make things even more reassuring, one of the off-site radiation monitoring stations got taken out too.

Now Rafael Grossi is back in diplomacy mode, trying to arrange a localized pause in the shooting. This marks the eighth time they've had to plead for a cease-fire just so repair crews can crawl up pylons with tools and patch up cables without being targeted by drones.

Europe's largest nuclear plant currently runs on the exact same honor system as an office breakroom microwave.
