Germany is helping Rosatom make nuclear fuel, because why not?
Just when everyone thought European energy ties with Moscow were cut, a plant in Lower Saxony got the green light to team up with Rosatom.
Remember how Germany famously shut down all its nuclear reactors to be safe and green? Well, plot twist: a nuclear fuel factory in Lingen just received official permission to produce fuel assemblies using Russian tech, right in partnership with Rosatom.
The plant belongs to Framatome, a French nuclear heavyweight. The goal is to supply Soviet-designed nuclear reactors still operating in Eastern Europe and Finland. The German government officially complains daily about Russian espionage, sabotage, and hybrid attacks, yet regulators rubber-stamped the deal anyway simply because the EU never slapped sanctions on Russia's atomic sector.
Even the regional environment minister publicly called the move fundamentally wrong right before his own department cleared it after exhaustive consultations.
Shutting down domestic reactors only to assemble Russian-designed nuclear fuel on home soil is truly a masterclass in European energy policy.
