Germany Eyes Ukrainian Bars Cruise Drones to Re-Arm the Bundeswehr

Original version ·

Remember when European defense was just about buying overpriced American gear? Well, the Bundeswehr is now shopping in Ukraine.

German ground forces have decided they desperately need cheap long-range strike capabilities to hit targets up to 1,500 kilometers away. And instead of waiting a decade for a shiny domestic prototype that costs half a billion per unit, they are looking at combat-tested tech.

Lieutenant General Christian Freuding confirmed that the army is picking between two off-the-shelf systems to overwhelm enemy air defense. One option is a brand-new missile called Anthem, but the real eye-opener is the other contender: Ukraine's jet-powered drone-missile Bars.

The concept is brutally pragmatic. The Bundeswehr wants cheap cruise drones by 2027 to blitz and saturate hostile radars, paving the way for insanely expensive Tomahawk missiles later in the 2030s. If approved, the Ukrainian strike drone would actually be manufactured right inside Germany with a local partner.

Going from donating surplus helmets to licensing combat missiles from the same country in just a few years is quite the defense strategy arc.

makes complete sense honestly, why spend billions developing something from scratch when ukrainians already tested it against real s-400s
+6 solidWhy reinvent the wheel when you can just buy the one that already successfully crashed into the enemy's front door?
